Our work for the contest

The next work we are presenting is a number of interviews we have been doing lately for a contest. In the interview we had to show what it is like to live abroad for someone from here or the lifestyle change for someone who has just moved in to The Basque Country.

The work was challenging due to the fact that we could not find the right time to interview because of the timetables. To start with, we had to prepare the questions in different languages for the different interviewees. Moreover, we had to prepare it in French acknowledging the fact that Jean spoke Spanish. As soon as we had prepared all the questions, we decided to set a date for the interviews. Unfortunately, we had problems, the interviewees did not turn up at the arranged time.

By the time we did the interviews, we were already snowed under with exams and unfortunately, had to focus on our studies. This is the main reason why we were running out of time with this work.

There were five of us in this project; Amaia, Lourdes, Elisabeth, Ioana and Kristina. The division of the work was decided the first day and it turned out to be a resounding success.

Amaia was in charge of choosing the questions which were going to be used in the interview and translating them to English. She was also a great help for the making of the videos. This last activity could not have been done without the help of Lourdes and Eli, who interviewed the foreigners. They also helped with the translations and Lourdes was the main designer of the videos. Kristina and Ioana  did also a huge effort to bring the material and to take part in the shooting of the interviews. It is necessary to underline the determination of Ioana when preparing everything for the shootings.

Irish come to San Sebastian

Three weeks later, our Irish partners came to San Sebastian to stay from the 18th to the 23rd of April.

First of all, we met them at the psichology university at 5 o'clock. Then, we went with them home to leave the luggage and after that we met the other students in Ogi Berri. Then, we went for a walk to "El Peine del Viento". We stayed there for a while and the Irish took some photos there. After that we went to "Miramar Jauregia" where we took some photos all together. Finally, we went home to have dinner.

On Friday, they came with us to school. We had to go to class so we couldn't do the things that they were doing together. They went to "San Telmo museum" walking through "La Concha". Then, they came to school again and we went home. In the afternoon, we went with them to the old part and the port. We had a walk there. Then, we went to have dinner to "La Vaca". We stayed there for a long time talking and eating. After having dinner we went home.

Next day, in the morning we went to the beach. Some of the Irish students went for a swim. After that we went home to have lunch. In the afternoon, we went shopping to the city centre. We walked for a long time. At night we went out. We went to the old part.

On Sunday, we stayed all day in the beach. It was quite sunny so we could stayed there for a long time. We had lunch there and in the afternoon we went to see the Real Sociedad's football match. After the match we went home.

On Monday, we got up early to go to school. We did two workshops with them and then they went to Igeldo. After that, they came to school and we went home to have lunch. In the afternoon, we went to the old part to buy souvenirs for the family. Then we went to Kresala to have dinner all the students and the teachers. We stayed all together in Kresala until 11pm, then the teachers told us to go home so we came back. There weren't buses to return to Antiguo so we had to came walking.

The last day, we came to school at 8am. We took some photos and we said "Goodbye!" to them. That day they were going to Gernika, to the peace museum and then to the airport.

Exchange with IRELAND

We are back again...

In the first week of our holidays some of the students of our eleanitza class went to Ireland. We stayed there from the 20th to the 25th of March.

First of all, we met the Irish at their school called Wilson's Hospital. They were waiting us. Then, we left our luggage in the hall and they showed us their town: Mullingar.

In general, all of the families were very kind with us and treated us as if we were their children.

In the second day, we went to the school with our partners and they showed us their traditional Irish dancing. It was quite weird but it was also funny to see everybody jumping around the room. Click here to see how they dance. After that, we went to play a typical sport from there: hurling. Most of us didn't try it, because it seemed to be really difficult. In the afternoon, we did some workshops related to the gender. It was interesting and we learnt some new things about it. However, the first workshop we did was much more better than the second one because the teacher was kinder and she explained everything more clearly. Moreover, it was more enjoyable.

Next day, we also went to school to take the bus and go to Dublin. Unfortunately, we had an awful weather. It was raining heavily and the strong wind didn't help too much. It was also freezing. We visited a free museum which was about the Irish history. Then, we went to the city centre and do shopping. We couldn't see Dublin properly because of the weather, but anyway we had a great time. Finally, we took the bus and returned with our families home.

On Saturday, we also went to Dublin but this time without teachers. We went by train. It took more or less 2 hours to get there. When we arrived, we had lunch and went shopping again. Apart from that, we also visited the most important streets and shopping centres.

On Sunday, we met our classmates in the shopping centre of Mullingar and we went to the cinema. The cinema was too far away from there, and it took us half an hour to get there. It was freezing and we arrived as if we were ice cubes. We saw a comedy called "Identity thief". We realized that the prize of the cinema was cheaper than here. And we also realized that we could understand the film easily.

In the last day, we just prepared our luggage and met the other students in the school. We said goodbye to our families and took the bus on the way back to San Sebastian.

Sustainability

Between all the topics about sustainability, we have chosen the environmental sustainability. We think it is important to know what problems are caused by the pollution in our world, and the future we will have if we continue like this. We have found some information about recycle, reuse and reduce and the benefits they bring us.

This is blog in which we have explained all we said above.

Video conference with Ms.Moon Sharma

 

On Friday morning, we went to a classroom both groups together. The Emaús members prepared a video conference with an Indian woman called Ms.Moon Sharma by Skype. We had some questions to ask her. She answered most of them but as we didn't have much time some questions weren't answered. At first, it was difficult to understand what she was saying because her accent was different and she spoke too fast. However, we managed to understand the main point of what she said.


Ms.Moon Sharma is a member of TARA.

Thanks to the video conference and the members of Emaús that came to our school, we know the basics of the Fair Trade.

Manos Unidas: "La salud, derecho de todos. ¡Actúa!"

We have done a poster that is related to an NGO called Manos Unidas.  

Manos Unidas is the Association of the Catholic Church in Spain for support, promotion and development of the Third World. It, in turn, an NGO for Development (NGO) volunteers, Catholic and secular.

World affair: Malnutrition in Ethiopia

We have been working in a presentation about world affairs and we chose to do it about the malnutrition in Ethiopia. This idea came up because we wanted to know more about this topic. Now, after searching a lot of information on the Internet about the hunger, we are aware of all the problems that brings hunger to those African countries.

Emaús in Luberri

Last Tuesday some members of Emaús came to school and talked about fair trade and its benefits.

Emmaús is an international charitable movement founded in Paris in 1949 by the Catholic priest Abbé Pierre to combat poverty and homelessness. Since 1971 regional and national initiatives have been grouped under a parent organization, Emmaús International, now run by Jean Rousseau, representing 310 groups in 38 countries, offering a range of charitable services.

From our point of view, all that they told us was sensible and we understood everything at once. Now, we have a wider knowledge about fair trade and we are going to be more careful about it.

European Union Citizenship

As set out in the Maastricht Treaty, any national of a Member State is a citizen of the Union. The aim of European citizenship is to strengthen and consolidate European identity by greater involvement of the citizens in the Community integration process. Thanks to the single market, citizens enjoy a series of general rights in various areas such as the free movement of goods and services, consumer protection and public health, equal opportunities and treatment, access to jobs and social protection. There are four categories of specific provisions and rights attached to citizenship of the European Union:

1. Freedom of movement and residence throughout the Union.
2. The right to vote and stand as a candidate in municipal elections and in elections to the European Parliament in the state where he/she resides. 
3. Protection by the diplomatic and consular authorities of any Member State where the State of which the person is a national is not represented in a non-member country. 
4. The right to petition the European Parliament and apply to the Ombudsman.

The teacher also asked us to invent two new rights about this subject. These are the rigths that we have thought about:

1. The right to be allowed to watch all channels shown in the EU to learn more about other cultures and languages.
2. The right to take secondary education in other countries of the EU without any conveniences. 

Parla Italiano?

This Christmas, we went to a disco where we heard a song which we learnt in our EUNI lessons. We learnt this song when our teacher was trying to teach us the basics of Italian. Thanks to this classes we can introduce ourselves and have a simple conversation with other people.
